Do you ever wonder where the names of the streets come from in Virignia Hills? Virginia, of course. The resemblance of these hills are similar to those found in the Appalachian Mountains. The mountains are connected to the Shenandoah Valley National Park in Virginia. Hence the street names, of Appalachian, Blue Ridge, Virginia Hills, Roanoke (after Virignia Roanoke), and Shenandoah. Living in Virginia Hills is like living in your own little City in the Country. Virginia Hills is surrounded by parks and open space and just a short walk away to Briones Park. It is conveniently located on the Pleasant Hill, Martinez and Lafayette borders. On some streets the right side is Martinez, the left side is Pleasant Hill and the top section is Lafayette. Many of the home here back to open space or have views of Mt. Diablo. Virginial Hills is convenient to nearby shopping at Safeway, three childcare centers, a number of great restaurants, Shannon Hills Park, Golden Hills Park, Hidden Lakes Park, and don't forget the "doggie park" on Paso Nogals. Hiking and walking trails are nearby with miles of trails in Briones. Located a short distance down Alhambra Avenue heading towards the train trestle is Mt. Wanda (across from the freeway from the John Muir House). Mt. Wanda's Ranger Rick sponsors wonderful wildflower hikes, bird watching and shooting star observations during the meteor showers. The hike is steep at first but levels out to a beautiful loop and then back down the mountain taking approximately 45 mintues to complete. Mt. Wanda was named after one of John Muir's daughters. From the top you can see the moth ball fleet in Benicia, the marina, and of course, Mt. Diablo. Freeway access is also a pleasant surprise. Highway 24 is just a few miles away via Pleasant Hill Road. Highway 680 is minutes away via Pleasant Hill Road in the opposite direction and close to Sun Valley Mall. Highway 4 can be connected via Alhambra Avenue going towards downtown. Further past Highway 4 traveling down Alhambra, you will end up at the Amtrak Station. Commuters sometimes live in Martinez and commute to Sacramento or Emeryville via train. All in all, if you were to ask any resident of Virigina Hills why they live here, they would tell you "it is because it is beautiful and convenient to everything!"
